Military Service is Not Only for Men
Did you know that Korea is the one of the few countries in the world where only males need to take two year mandatory military service? In Israel, women are required to go military the same as men do, showing an opposite aspect compared to Korean system. Ultimately, the regulation of men’s mandatory military service is one of the debatable issues in Korea society between men and women. While males express their dissatisfactions with the existence of the long term military system, women assert that it is a reasonable policy for males who are born in Korea. In my opinion, military service should be compulsory to both men and women in Korea, because women also have responsibilities to protect the country, it is unfair for only men to experience difficulties in new environment after their service, and men’s absence due to service brings negative aspects in economic development in our society.

First, it is not only men but also women’s duty to protect our nation, so it is unfair for men to take all those burdens. The main reason for requiring military service is to increase the military power in order to be prepared for North Korea’s attack. However, what will women do if the war really occurs in Korea? Since women are not trained for the attacks, they just need to be dependent on men. To be honest, I would like to join the army and protect myself and my family instead of waiting for other’s protection. Therefore, women should also be part of the military service in order to protect the nation and themselves without men’s help. In the past, one congressman named Ku Baek Ahn stated that women should at least learn some medical treatments and prepare for immediate escape for the sudden attacks from the enemy. Hence, because of the physical disadvantage compared to men, it will be better for women to perform their duties of protecting the nation by learning practical education of War Readiness in a replacement of military service.

In addition, long term military service causes male facing the difficulty in adapting into unusual environment which is one of the biggest disadvantages after their return from the military. To be more specific, it is an obvious fact that males who served for two years in isolated areas will face challenges in the ordinary society, probably taking time to adapt to the new environment. To support this statement, there is a data from YTN New which reported that about one third of college male students rest for one semester after their return from military service. One male student said that he has been so exhausted from spending his time in isolated areas where there are no media, freedom, or entertainment. He expresses that he has been oppressed for two years, and this eventually resulted in the difficulty and confusion of facing a different environment. On the other hand, women will have enough time of actively participating and receiving chances in the society while men serve strenuous military service in isolated area. Therefore, because of the extreme stress that males feel after their military service, Korea should equally apply compulsory military service polity to both men and or lessen the service term by considering the difficulties of what men face after their long term military service.

Finally, the mandatory long term military service can also be an obstacle in the nation’s development by preventing the early expansion of males in the employment. As it was mentioned before, males face difficulties right after their end of military service and these difficulties of adapting to a new environment can also cause the impact on the preparation of getting jobs, leading to the postponement of elites associating into every job field. While men have to experience strenuous training in the military for two years, at that time women just need to prepare for their own careers and probably get employed faster than men. Therefore, this clearly shows that males will get fewer chances or even face disadvantages in the process of preparing for building their own careers compared to women, and it will eventually cause negative effects in our society, such as loss in economic development due to male’s mandatory military service.

Overall, there are some negative aspects about the issue of males’ mandatory military service in Korea. First, the purpose of military service, which is protecting the nation and preparing for the attack of North Korea in near future, is not only for men’s duty but also for women, so it is not fair for only males to serve in the military. In addition, the long term of military service in isolated areas brings negative influences on both males themselves and for the nation. Males will face hard times adapting to a new environment and this problem can also influence the development of our society. As we see this issue in males viewpoint, we could see that there are some disadvantages for males and recognize that military service is not really a fair policy. The best solution to improve this problem is emphasizing the sexual equality by regulating the law of women to also be part of the mandatory military service policy. Moreover, lessening the term of military service will also improve the problem of men struggling from isolated areas to adapt in ordinary society immediately. From this change, there will be effects of less complaints and disadvantages of men related to this problem.

One World Langauge

Do you know how many spoken languages exist? Surprisingly, there are about 7,000 languages in the world. While there are so many unexpected languages, it is estimated that one language dies every 14 days, showing the severe danger of cultural loss. Even though groups like Canadian organization named First Voice make hard efforts to prevent this serious problem, spending too much times on saving numerous numbers of indigenous languages are somewhat time wasting. Therefore, it will be better to choose one global language for a wide and fast communication, for improvement in global economy and also for creation of equality among different ethnics.

First, one of the greatest benefit of one world language is that it will definitely bring feasible and fast communication among people who speak different languages. To be specific, if there will be one global language, people will feel comfortability and this will be a big improvement in their lifetime. For examples, people with differently spoken languages will experience more active conference during business meetings without any misunderstandings during their conversations. From one globalized language, there could be a better sufficient result than spoken in several languages. Not only this, but there are more examples that fit into this topic. Hence, it is clear that one globalized language bring more benefits, probably bringing better results, rather than keep speaking in several languages.

Moreover, deciding one global language can also cause the improvement in economy rise from accepting elites with diverse nationalities. According to the book named,  “The Post-American World” written by Fareed Zakaria, he states that America has received many economy benefits especially from Indians, who takes bigger part in the development of nation, and this eventually become a true fact. Since Indians are learned to speak bi-lingual, including English, and the fact that Indians have higher IQ and working abilities than other ethnics is scientifically proven, so it is a reasonable theory. Hence, making one official language will be more practical for every nationalities, and this will definitely bring benefits or development globally in every fields.
<The author of "The Post-American World">

At last, speaking in one global language can likely create equality and peace among different ethnics. To be more specific, one official language can decrease the conflicts of racism and stereotypes. For instance, in the movie “Crash” there is a scene where Persian store owner and Mexican-American locksmith argue with each other because the store owner is not fluent in English, and most significantly, the Persian store owner treats badly and insults the locksmith because of the stereotype. Specifically, the store owner says that locksmith is trying to deceive the owner in order to receive more money, which is not true. Eventually, the store owner does not believe what the locksmith says so his store got stolen, and he blamed all he faults to the locksmith, increasing more conflict between two different ethnics. By looking at this example, it shows that speaking in several languages is an obstacle that prevents that acceptance of cultural diversity among people, so choosing one global language will be a better solution.
<Movie "Crash">

In conclusion, there are more benefits if we keep only one dominant world language rather than sustaining numerous numbers of languages. People with diverse ethnics and different cultural backgrounds can have wide and fast communication, one globalized language can definitely bring economy or further more global development, and also speaking in one language can cause the equality among different ethnics, decreasing the racial discrimination and hatreds with each other. Sustaining several languages can possibly a way of keeping cultures. However, I personally think that future development is also a significant object to be improved, so I strongly state that one official language is a reasonable idea.

Positive and Negative Effects of the Elimination of the Suneung Exam
The first Thursday in November is probably the most important and nervous event for every third year high school student and even for their guardians in Korea. That day is the Suneung, one day exam for university admissions. Since the score of this exam determines the future of the examinees, students have prepared and studied for most of their high school lives, even losing sleep, to take this exam. However, let’s imagine this. What if the Suneung exam disappeared in Korea? It would be very delightful news to students because they would not need to worry or get stressed about this one day test for rest of their lives. If the Suneung exam were gone forever, only documents based on what students have participated in during their high school years would be evaluated for university admissions and this can naturally bring some positive and negative effects.
First, one of the positive effects of changing Suneung system to student document examination is that students will get more chances to participate in diverse fields rather than just spending time studying. To be specific, students might need to fill their curriculums by participating in several activities such as sports, volunteer activities, language certificates, and achievement awards, and this will be a great chance for students to find their hidden abilities or interests. One of the unfortunate facts about Korea’s indoctrination, a forcing education method without specifically understanding it, is that it is limiting every students’ potential abilities. No matter what students want to study or interested in, the Korea education system is only providing courses which consider as “important” and mandatory subjects like Korean language and math. Thus, this limited teaching of few subjects causes students the dissatisfaction of their own university majors and it turns out to be that many university students in Korea drop out of schools to start university entrance admissions again. According to the Chung-Ang Newspaper, it is significantly proved that more than half of university students are not satisfied at either their main major or their campus life. Therefore, changing the Suneung system to evaluating only the documents based on students’ extra curriculums, personal statements, and GPA will be thoroughly enough to examine student’s potential and learning abilities for admission.
Although students get chances to experience in diverse fields, this can possibly cause negative effects of unfair admissions. To be specific, students who are economically beneficial have higher chances to participate in diverse extra curriculum activities while poor students have limited chances. Eventually, this problem will arouse another serious social issue, an unfair admissions between between rich and poor. As we already know, private education is always the hottest concern for parents in Korea, and this is why the business of hagwon is actively owned in areas such as Daechi and Mokdong. Even though hagwons’ that teach Suneung subjects will be closed, there will be numerous numbers of hagwons be opened for searching information or counseling students in receiving the extra curriculum activities. If this issue really happens, the problem is that not only that there will be no fairness in university admission, but also that students who live wealthy will get higher chances to get admitted in high level colleges while those who don’t have enough money to fill good extra curriculum lists will get lesser chances to get into good colleges. To support this statement, Chung-Ang Newspaper University Evaluation Research reports that about 6 out of 10 examinees slightly noticed that during admission, being less wealthy have some disadvantages in acceptance of the universities. Hence, this example clearly proves that if the Suneung exam is eliminated and university admissions change to only a document examination, there will be a serious unfairness in admission and this problem can show another example of economic inequality in Korean society.
Overall, when the Suneung exam is gone and a new admission system, an examination of students’ high school documents, is established there will be both positive and negative effects. The positive effect is that students will try out many experiences in different fields and get chances to discover their hidden abilities and interest in that certain field. From this, it will be helpful for students to choose majors related to their future careers. On the other hand, only students from wealthy background will receive more advantages during the process of filling their extra curriculum lists. Thus, this problem will lead another example of unfairness in gap between rich and poor in education field. Since the obsession of academic elitism won’t disappear forever in Korea society, the most suitable solution for this problem is that government or the Ministry of Education should decrease the Private Education by regulations, and create diverse “college entrance type,” such as country-side resident student admission, multi-cultural family child admission and low income family students, that suits for different types of students in order to prove a fair admission.

Steve Jobs: The greatest innovator

Steve Jobs is probably one of the most well-known and admired CEO in a worldwide. His achievement of building his career as a successful businessman definitely gave strong impressions to the youngest generation. Then let’s question to ourselves. Why do you think that Steve Jobs is the most influential and respected man among others? There are other renowned public faces such as Bill Gates, President Barack Obama, Mark Zuckerberg etc, who are also respected, but still Steve Job is always ranked first place for the “Greatest Business Leaders of all time.” Without pondering it, Steve Jobs deserves high recognition than any other successfully renowned CEO’s because of his cutting-edge inventions and his outstanding leadership.

To begin with, Steve Jobs deserves high recognition because he obviously invented technologies that brought revolutionary innovation in our century. To be specific, he had created unprecedented tools that have never been expected or seemed to be possible, which impressed the world. When Apple released the 1st iPhone generation in January 2007, people were in fact not motivated, and said the device was “obsolete.” Even though the first start of iPhone business was not really successful, Steve Jobs eagerly devoted his efforts, developing the iPhone into more delicate and portable device. After the time passes, Steve Jobs finally announced the new feature of iPhone, a high-technology device that is worked by multi-touch screen, in 2011 and the result came out that new version of iPhone was sold twice as the original version. Eventually, his continuous study and marketing had led to create one of the most selling smart phone in a world, and even for Apple Company to become the center in technology field.

Moreover, his potential and charismatic personality as a leader is one crucial factor that highlighted his recognition. We may expect that Jobs had always stepped successful path, but in reality, he had faced lots of difficulties and failures which affected his career. First, Steve Jobs was adopted and raised in a poor family, so he had very limited chance of receiving more education or financial supports from his family. In fact, he actually dropped off the university and started his own business by himself. Unlike successful CEO like Bill Gates who was raised in wealthy lawyer family, Steve Jobs had to build his own career all of by himself, which definitely made him more stronger and independent leader. Moreover, as a big example, Steve Jobs was fired in his own company by his co-workers. This was a tremendous breakdown to Steve Jobs because he felt extreme shame and betrayal from his people, who did not like Jobs’s stubborn and dictated personality. Although Steve Jobs was kicked out in his own company, he later on returned to Apple again after his new start in his new business with new co-workers in a new environment. Because Steve Jobs had brought successful and prominent result in his new business, he was once again get recognition in business field and was called back again to Apple. Hence, his patience, passion and tenacity toward his dream were keys to his success.

Overall, it is clear fact that Steven Jobs works and his innate personality has gradually distinguished him as a recognizable figure. His revolutionary inventions brought new change in modern world and it became possible to live in more comfortable and protected society by using this high-tech devices. In addition, his eager passion and continuous challenges even at unfortunate situation were crucial factors of his success. In point of fact, Steve Jobs probably deserves to get more praises from other successful businessmen, because he had done all of his works by himself even in a difficult environment. By looking at these characteristics, there is no doubt that he is called the “genius of the century.”

Ensuring a Sustainable Future

Have you recently seen a photo of skinny polar bear that was shown in News? Usually we think polar bear as a furry and chubby animal. However, the photoshoot of recent polar bear in the news looked so different that shocked everyone. Eventually it became the hottest issue that clearly showed the seriousness of global warming and the possible danger of unstable future. After this incident, scientists and people started to worry about the sustainability of future livings. In fact, scientists claimed that this figure already proves the big risk of sustainable future that we should find solutions to prevent the worse situation. In order to sustain the future of our and even our future generations’ livings, both Government and individuals should work together by inventing environmental machines or tools and supporting community for actions in order to make process of protecting the environment

First, Government should eagerly support science fields for building useful inventions in order to solve this problem. To be specific, scientists should make efforts on inventing environmental machines such as car moving without any need of fossil. In scientific term, this kind of car is called “Green Car,” and it consumes less harmful engine oils that are good for reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Since regular cars release so much harmful concentrated gas, changing vehicles into environmental cars will be an influential way to protect the environment and also to prevent the climate change. To do so, it is significant that Government should contribute some financial supports for this project.

Also, not only that big community like Government should only focus on future sustainability, but also individuals should work on by themselves starting from a small community. Thus, the best way for us to protect the environment is recycling well. This might sound very small thing that can be helpful for saving the environment but in fact, processing this small action can bring big difference. To support the previous statement, the science research proves that recycling one papers can reduce emissions of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming. In addition, it is also mentioned that paper recycling leaves more trees to sustain and this naturally supports for saving the forest. For these reasons, recycling is a crucial part for protecting the future sustainability. Hence, every communities in the area should held certain day for recycling. South Korea already holds this system and mostly this mandatory recycling day is held on weekends. Since this recycling system has kept showing positive effects, we certainly should continue it without non stopping.

Overall, there are two influential ways to protect the sustainable future. One way is to Government providing financial support to the Science fields in order to invent environmental friendly products that can be helpful for saving the pollution. Another method is that people in any communities should passionately participated in recycling because this system is the most persuasive way for sustaining the future environment. By looking at these statements, it seems that these solutions are existed only for protecting the future environment. However, not only that we could protect the environment from processing these solutions but also that they could be also beneficial for developing economy.

Explanatory Essay: The Help

When you watch movies, do you often think that the locations filmed in movies are important? Some may just enjoy movies without considering it, but some might notice the importance and the purpose of the location it is filmed. In fact, location could be a crucial element in order to understand the backgrounds and history more clearly and deeply about the movie. The Help, movie based on novel about the African-Americans’ personal stories as house maids working for whites in a discriminated situation, was filmed in Greenword, Mississippi and this location was very important element in order to comprehend the historical backgrounds about serious racism and culture of that time period in Mississippi.
<Movie The Help>

Mississippi is a significant place in this movie because it is the most fitting place to portray the feature of racism in 1960s America. 1960 era in America was the term when the uprisal of racial civil rights was occurring, such as Martin Luther King marching and making a speech for blacks. Unlike Washington and New York, where there were protests for civil rights, Mississippi was the state where blacks were still not able to express their rights. In fact, their rights were oppressed and even were threatened by whites. For example, Aibileen and other black maids were humiliated because they were supposed to use separate bathrooms to prevent the “disease,” and there were KKK who killed innocent blacks in Jackson. According to the history, Mississippi was one of the states that had serious segregation issues existed, and that’s why main characters like Aibileen, Minny and Skeeter get motivated to start this dangerous challenge. Even though their lives won’t be safe when they get caught, their desire to live more fair as a human being and the hope to spread the serious issues of black segregation were so eager that they decide this challenge. Therefore, the historical backgrounds about the black segregation in Mississippi in the past clearly show that its’ location is a right place to emphasize the topic.
<Images of African-American Civil Rights movement and KKK>

Moreover, one of the reasons why Mississippi is a critical place is because the local culture of that town are suitable for raising the amusements while watching the movie. To be specific, slang words, costumes, jokes and the scene of cotton fields catch attentions and even get assumption about the historical backgrounds of slavery in the past. Since there are several cotton fields in Jackson town, Mississippi has become the root of African-American habitants. Also, blacks using unfamiliar English, slang words, and the pronunciation of Southern US state are so different that caught our attention. Especially Minny, a black maid and friend of Aibileen, sarcastically mocks white ladies and her being a loud mouth are truly fascinating. One of the most fascinating scene about Minny in this movie is when she says “Eat my shit” to Miss Hilly when handing the pie. Her humorous and unpredictable personalities, which can also define the general feature of blacks, definitely outstands in the entire movie. For these reasons, Mississippi is a perfect place to be filmed in the movie The Help.
<Minny saying: "Eat my shit" in movie>

Overall, Mississippi State is undoubtedly a right place and an important element in filming the movie The Help. Mississippi’s historical background of black slavery and serious segregation problems possibly relates to the situation of the novel. In addition, the local culture of southern citizens and blacks’ languages and costumes also become a crucial part to emphasize the amusement of movie. The movie The Help was actually nominated in the Academy Award in 2012, and as matter of fact many critics claim that the image of Mississippi was a crucial part for the nomination. Hence, it could be proved that location filmed in movies or seen in any novels could be an essential source.

Geotourism

Geotourism: Jejugeo Park, Korea

Have you ever heard about the word “Geotourism?” I guess many people are not familiar with this word, in fact I had recently found out what geotourism is. According to the Wikipedia, the most widely known definition of Geotourism is “purely geological and geomorphologically –focused sustainable tourism as abiotic nature based tourism.” (Wikipedia) Basically, it means that it is a tourism that sustains the exact geographical features of a place and these include the environment, heritage, culture and the living lives of local people etc. Nowadays, there are many Geotourism in worldwide and people could closely enjoy the nature and also get chances to learn more about the unfamiliar characters in rural areas. In Korea, there is also a famous Geotourism area in Jeju island. It’s called JeJugeo Park(제주지질공원) and this place is well known as one of the famous geological park selected by UNESCO in 2010. Because there are many beautiful and natural attractions in Jejugeo Park, many tourists visit the area and this influence shows some postive effects of Geotourism, which are maintaining the local community from the tourism profits, and tourists getting chance of learning and respecting the protected areas.

One of the possible effects of Jejugeo Park is supporting the local community. To be specific, money that tourists spend in tourism, local foods, entertainments etc. helps the living of local community. In JeJugeopark, there are many diverse activities provided that tourists can enjoy. For example, there is a baking class and the class teaches children how to bake a “stratum cake.” This cake is shaped as stratum and this resembles one of the famous stratum attraction in Jejugeo Park. Furthermore, there are other activities such as cooking a local food, visiting local farm and plant organic vegetables and taking a “Geo railroad.” By providing these diverse and interesting activities, tourists get attention and  it naturally leads to benefits for local residents.

지오푸드를 소개합니다!산방탕

Other possible effect is that tourists get chances to learn about the local culture and also respect the natural belongings. JeJugeo was selected as the cleanest island in UNESCO. Therefore, it has become important to sustain the natural belongings, such as mountains and beach attractions, to keep the island as a beautiful place. To protect the environment in Jejugeo Park, the local communities continuously spend efforts teaching the tourists the importance of Jejugeo Park’s existence through the tour guide or education. Because of these effective actions, tourists can easily understand it’s local culture and also fascinates at the nature beauty of JeJu Island.

Photo of Stratum attraction in JeJugeo island

Overall, there are two postive effects of Geotourism in JeJugeo Park. First, Geotourism in JeJuGeo Park can lead many people’s attentions and naturally this brings profits to local community. In addition, tourists understanding the JeJu local community culture and noticing the importance of nature are positive ways to protect the area of JeJu island, which is one of the most clean island in the world. As we could see, sustaining endangered areas by holding geotourism shows several benefits to both community and tourists. Hence, the rise of geotourism may be a practical solution to keep our traditional cultures and culture relics to the public.

Blog Post #2: Tech Detectives short summary

Police detectives have used several technologies in order to solve crimes. For instance, DNA analysis, Computer Tomography (CT) imaging and finger printings etc. Because of these developed technologies, scientists and detectives can eailsy get clues to understand the mysteries of crimes.
Today, I will briefly tell special cases of crimes solved by using"unusual tools" in the history!

1. Leech- Robbery Case in Australia

Do you know what is Leech? Leech is a creature that lives in a fresh water area and it's distinctive character is that it sucks human's blood.

Picture of leech

Sucking human blood. This means that we can find out someone's DNA by investigating the blood.

In 2009, there was a case that detectives in Austrailia actually solved the robbery case by using a leech found in a crime area.
In 2001, two men robbed old lady's house, stealing big amount of money. However, there was a leech filled with blood found in the crime area and detectives immediately investigated it. After several years of that robbery case, the crime suspects were caught in other crime case in the process of DNA Analysis. Leech seems to be a useless creature in the world, but it can be very helpful and distinctive tool to solve a crime by looking this case! :)

2. Plant- Arizona

Flower can also be a helpful tool to find more specific evidences in crime.
In 1992, plant DNA evidence led to solve  a murder case in the state of Arizona, United States.
At first, the crime suspect denied his crime, claiming he had never been in the crime scene.
Moreover, he even accused the victim of robbery. In order to find clear evidences to solve the crime, dectectives searched the suspects truck and found seed pods. This became very important clue because palo verde trees have unique pattern of DNA. By analyzing the seed pods, detectives could find if the analysis matchs with the exact tree located in the crime scence. Hence, it turned out to be the crime suspect was guilty and it was possible to end this case perfectly because of palo verde tree.

3. X-ray and CT imaging technology-  Italy

Nowadays, we could find out more specific information about how the person was killed by using new developed technologies, such as CT imaging. By using CT imaging, scientists found out how Iceman, Europe's oldes mummy, had been killed in past. According to the result, Iceman had been killed brutally because there was an arrowhead in his left shoulder, several wounds on his hands and injuries of violent fights. In addition, CT imaging caught that Iceman's stomach was full, meaning he had a nice meal before his death. By looking at these clues, scientist claimed that the Iceman was probably killed by one or more enemies right after a meal.
